1. A lot of the music I write about here will be relatively unknown, but I will never ever recommend a band or an artist just because no one has heard of them or they're weird. Unusual does not always mean good, and unknown does not always mean cool. Sometimes there is a good reason why bands are unknown. Similarly, you're not going to find any predictions of the Next Big Thing here, a) I would almost certainly get it wrong and b) like I said, I am not going to start professing my love for something because it is trendy.
2. Although I will probably start professing my love for some up-and-coming trendy music. It works both ways, you know. A lot of music is popular for a reason. I won't be going on and on about how much I love the new Girls Aloud or Red Hot Chili Peppers single because what would be the point in publicising music which is already wildly popular? Anyone can go pick up a newspaper and read a review that is probably better written than mine anyway.
3. This doesn't mean I don't like popular music, however. I try not to be all scene and stop liking bands because they got popular and "sold out". Sold out? How can you tell? And it's not like the magical process of "selling out" would alter the music made before it took place. And I like a lot of music which came prepackaged as sold out before they even began. Pussycat Dolls? Possibly the falsest, most manufactured band on the face of the earth, and yet I cannot help liking most of their bubble-headed pop. Except their cover of Tainted Love. That is one of the few songs which can never, ever be improved, no matter who tries to cover it.
4. Please friend and comment, even if (especially if) you disagree. Got a bone to pick with me over my inexplicable dislike of that brilliant but misunderstood Swedish hip-hop orchestra who like to perform in hyena costumes? Flame away. Just bear in mind that it is only music, and if you're going to get vitriolic there are some way more important issues you should channel that anger at.
5. Tell me about music you like. It can be absolutely anything. Really. Gogol Bordello B-side, Doctor Who soundtrack, whatever.
